College Magazine Questionnaire Analysis

Questionnaire Analysis

We surveyed students from around the school, 55% male and 45% female. When asked if they would pay for a student magazine 70% of them said that they would not pay for a college magazine, this means that our magazine will have to be free or very cheap <50p until we build up a reputation. From our survey we found that the main things that would encourage the students to buy the magazine would be, freebies, college news and information and music articles. 80% of students checked their college emails regularly this means we can inform them about our magazine via their emails. Half of the students we asked wanted the magazine published every month however only 25% would be willing to help contributed to the production. Next we asked what they would like to see in the magazine, music, sports, trip and other college news, discounts, competitions, gossip and pictures, are the main things that came up regularly. On the front cover students told me to include images of the students taken by the students and bright colours to attract them. Finally we found that 100% of the college do not read the original magazine this lets us know that the magazine is not working.

Contents Page ANalysis 3

The way the masthead is written in yellow on a black background really makes it stand out and catch the readers’ eye compared to the light back grounded plain rest of the page.  They also use a quote from Kirk Hammett to entice the audience because this is someone they would be interested in. the sub headings are written in capitals and back grounded again to make them attention grabbing. This magazine has an editor’s note, this makes the reader feel like the magazine has been made especially for them. They use a thumbnail of the front cover which is needed as the name of the magazine isn’t included.  The largest image on the page is a close up of a man, he look secretive and up close and personal signifying the article delves deep and is revealing. This image being the largest would suggest he is more important than the other bands pictured. The 2 backgrounds are similar so the picture bleeds and blends into each other possibly showing that his talent is uncontrollable and can’t be confined. The images are anchored by page numbers this makes the information easy to access for the readers. The images relate to the article inside the magazine and therefore appeal to the correct demographic. The images are meant to entice the readers I would suggest that is why there are images of bands living the rock and roll lifestyle and at gigs.  Below the images the artist’s names are written in bold this is also to catch the reader’s attention and make information easy to find. There is a consistent colour scheme of; black yellow and white to keep a tidy but interesting layout. They use lines down each column to create structure.

Contents Page Analysis 2

The logo of the magazine is in the same font, space and style as it is on the front cover just smaller. The sub headings are in bold so this attracts the eye of the reader. There is a plain colour scheme used throughout the page also. The main text is written in a simple font so that it is easy to read and doesn’t look cluttered. The white background also contributes to this and makes the image the main the main attraction. However compared to the front covers, the text covers the image (left hand side) this would suggest that the text is more unique and important than the image in this case. The page numbers are in red so that they are easily found. The arrow at the bottom of the page makes the reader feel like there is more to find out and maybe more exclusive gossip if they keep reading and is used as an incentive not an instruction. The whole page and all fonts used are very simple, this is good as a detailed contents page is no use, and people want to find what they are looking for quickly without having to read through everything. The main article is in its own banner at the bottom, this article is going to be the most read article in the magazine and the main reason people bought the magazine so they have essentially created a shortcut to find it.

Contents Page Analysis

The way the contents page is set out is the same as every other issue of this magazine; the large v in the background of the image, font and layout of the title and font and layout of the body text are always the same. The way the title is written is very unique so this is a convention that audience can associate with the magazine. The colour scheme used corresponds to the front cover and give off an expensive look. The title is written in white as it highly contrasts against the back background. In the image the lady is making a ‘v’ shape with her legs this represents the logo of the magazine. From this image I would assume that the magazine is targeted at a male audience however the font of the main body text would suggest otherwise. The position the lady in the photo is laying frames the page and the way her legs are placed draws the eye over the whole page and to the title. The image does show a bit about what will be featured in the magazine however on other magazines there is normally a few images to show a larger range without having to read.

College Magazine Cover Analysis

The image is of a college student of the same age as the target audience, the image is shot on a nice sunny day and the girl is smiling giving the college an appealing friendly atmosphere look. The girl is wearing a ‘I love smu’ top the same colour as the masthead this links the college to the magazine as shows that she enjoys college life. The student shown in the image seems to be popular due to her name being mentioned on of the stories ‘Nastia Liukin’. The background of the images is blurred out, so that the girl is the main focus of the image. The minimal colours are used and appeal to both boys and girls. And different fonts are used so to differentiate between the texts. Next to the barcode it says ‘100% free’ this would appeal to college students as they don’t have much money to spare. The stories set around the image are based on college lifestyle and would appeal to college students.

Magazine Cover Analysis 3

The masthead is partly covered by the image; this would suggest that Q is a well-known and recognised brand. They use a red background to their mast head, this makes it stand out and the colour red symbolises passion that could represent the passion Q readers have for music. It’s also a very flattering colour to the human eye. The image used dominates the whole cover and is related to the main cover story. The image is of lady gaga who is big in the music industry, the image is very striking and serious that suggests this magazine is serious in its articles. She is also making eye contact with the audience, which is a direct address and makes the magazine seem as if it’s talking to the person. The image is a mid-shot; this means her outfit is a main part to this image. The way she is dressed would denote this is a man’s magazine, unless it was taken In black and white, as that would make the image seem less sexual and more artistic and therefore be acceptable to read for women.  ‘Lady gaga had risen’ is written I white because white suggests new-ness and rebirth. The image is a mid/long shot this shows the exclusivity of lady gaga and the fact that you can’t get too close. There is 3 main colours running all the way through the cover; red white and black, these all work well together. The repeated colours give a sense of harmony and make the eye travel over the whole cover. The sell line is partly covered by the main image this would symbolise that the artist is bigger than the magazine or that the magazine is so big it doesn’t need you to buy it. The cover line at the top left the number ‘100’ is wrote large bold and red this shows Q’s vast knowledge about music. The background of the cover is a silver colour that makes it look expensive.

Q’s target audience is mainly males aged 15-40, from a higher class group.

Magazine Cover Analysis 2

The masthead is written in red that is the main colour used throughout the front cover. This colour contrasts to the black and white image used. The mast head is found at the top of the magazine and always uses the same font so that it is recognisable to the audience. The mast head has been written in a flattering but bold colour to the eye therefore it grabs your attention and is the first thing you look at on the cover that’s why it should be something recognisable so that the reader wants to look at more.  The image is taken in black and white therefore it is appealing to both genders. The way the man in the image is dressed would represent the style the readers would dress in and the type of music this magazine is about. The image is a close up, this shows the emotion in a picture, the man looks serious this would suggest the magazine is serious about its articles and. Also the man is looking directly down the lenses making the audience feel directly addressed and involved in the magazine.  3 main colours have been used on this front cover; red black and white. These all work well together. The black and white give a sophisticated look, while the red is bold and makes the main features stand out and draw the eye.  Using the same colours compliments the cover as it makes it look neat instead of cluttered and confusing. The cover lines are written around the image; this frames it and makes it stand out as more than just a background.
They use a quote ‘there is no such thing as a secret snitch’ this would intrigue the audience as they would be interested in the source it came from. Using a quote makes the magazine seem popular and reliable as well as exclusive.

Vibes target audience are about 50/50 male and female. Their readers ages range from 25-35 on average and come from a/b class.

Magazine Cover Analysis 1

The mast head is conventionally placed at the top of the cover, in same font, colour ect. The red blue and yellow used suggests that this magazine might be for a much younger audience. In the image the main subject is looking straight at the reader, grabbing attention. The costume worn is low cut and would therefore appeal to men and rule out the child audience assumption. This kind of image would also appeal to women who would idolise her and want to look like that. The fact that she is smiling in the image creates the illusion that if you buy this magazine you will be this happy and look this good. Her pose is flirtatious and she is twirling her hair this would again attract a male orientated audience. The main artist in the image in a spot light almost so she looks a lot lighter than the background so you focus is on her and not the surroundings. The main artist; Katy Perry is a popular artist so by putting her on the cover they are attracting a large audience, the artist credit anchors the image. Underneath this is a glimpse of the interview inside the copy, this will trigger the readers curiosity leading them to buy the issue. The colour scheme focuses on three colours; red white and yellow, this is enough to not overwhelm the eye. The white font contrasts well with the red curtain background and the red is appealing to all ages and genders.

Billboards target audience is aimed at both genders aged 25-56.
